Staghorn Sumac
Staghorn Sumac
Rhus typhina is a fast growing species of understory tree loved for its lemonade berries, but we also love it for the canopy it provides our flock during the summer, the number of native bees it supports, and its utility as a chop and drop material or as biochar feedstock. Can be cut back to the ground annually to help control its spread or allowed to form thickets. Prefers full sun to part shade and will decline in deeper shade, making it a candidate for pioneering a new section of forest-to-be.
